The power of books feedback and reflection

For this first part of Creative book design has been a good introduction in what this unit consists of. I liked looking back at the childhood books I’ve read and connecting it with my goals in book design and the influence they have on me as an artist. I was not expecting this unit to be about the ‘physical’ making of a book in depth, I only though it was still about the illustrating and graphics but I’m grateful I get to explore the production because this definitely going to be helpful to me in the future if I chose to design, illustrate, or even create my own book.

The practical part of part one so far have been my favourite, I love getting stuck in to making things with my hands. The research although tedious is actually really good for inspiration and how other artists create their own work. Learning about fanzines was also good, I didn’t realise it was as big of a thing as it is. I could Definitely see myself creating one in the future for something I like just for fun. Learning a bit about production was interesting too, the sizing, paper finish and weight, the stylistic choices of the prints and the colours.

I’m hoping I can expand my skills when the unit focuses more on typography as I’m not as familiar with this element of design as I am illustrating, It will give me more opportunities in the field of design.

Feedback

As for my feedback It wasn’t as bad as I thought I think a running theme is I don’t do as in-depth research as I could be, I’m also quite limited to online research so I might have to try push myself outdoors to some libraries and bookshops. Another thing I can improve is the planning and step showing of how I get the finish product, because my ideas are often spontaneous; how I got to my final piece isn’t always as clear to the readers at times.
